$50 000 for volunteers in Young and Cowra
Sixteen community organisations in the Young and Cowra region will share in almost $50 000 in Australian Government Volunteer Grants.
This forms part of the Government’s $21 million Volunteer Grants program to support over 6,000 community organisations across Australia, which was announced by Minister for Families and Community Services, Jenny Macklin and Parliamentary Secretary for the Voluntary Sector, Ursula Stephens earlier this month.
The Grants provide funding of between $1,000 and $5,000 for community organisations to purchase much-needed equipment such as computers, barbecues as well as providing a contribution towards fuel expenses incurred by volunteers during their volunteering work.
This year, the grants program was extended to help organisations meet the costs of training their volunteers and to assist with the costs associated with police and background checks.
Senator Stephens said the grants provide much needed support to the diverse range of not for profit organisations that enrich our community life in so many ways. Volunteer based organisations respond to emergencies and natural disasters, protect our environment, support the arts, culture and sport, and help people who are at risk of social isolation, poverty, homelessness and other forms of hardship.
Grant recipients include the Cowra Community Information and Neighbourhood Centre and the Cowra Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society, which will use its $2 481 grant to buy a photocopier. Local sporting organisations have also done well with the Young Polocrosse Club, Young Dressage Association, Koorawatha Rugby League Club and Bribbaree Pony Club all receiving grants to support their volunteers.
Volunteer Grants 2010 recognises the valuable work of Australia’s volunteers and is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting volunteers, assisting disadvantaged communities and building an inclusive Australia where everyone can participate.
Around 254,000 community volunteers across Australia will be assisted under Volunteer Grants 2010.
